Central Data, Multibus II, Intelligent Communications Controller

  • Connects eight RS-232 ports to any Multibus II system; two ports can be RS-422/449

  • Uses 8530 Serial Communications Controllers and an 8MHz 80186 microprocessor

  • Supports Multibus II interconnect space and built-in self test (BIST) power-up diagnostics

  • Supports full message passing using MPC

  • Supports and performs 8-, 16-, and 32-bit Multibus II data transfers

  • Uses 512K of parity protected RAM as buffers for data in and out

  • 8237A four-channel DMA controller

  • Two SBX interfaces

  • Supports 0n-board asynchronous, X.25, and SNA protocols

The Central Data CD22/3800 Multibus II Intelligent Communications Controller (ICC) adds extensive serial communications abilities to any Multibus II system. This board provides the interface for up to eight RS-232 channels. Two of the ports can optionally use RS-422/449. Each port is controlled by an 8530 Serial Communications Controller (SCC).

An on-board 8MHz 80186 microprocessor handles all commands from the host(s) and manages all data transfers to and from SCCs. The board includes 512K of parity protected dynamic RAM used as I/O data buffers. This extensive buffer space allows the implementation of downloaded asynchronous, X.25, SNA, and user defined protocols.

Up to 128K of EPROM is also available to the 80186. This memory allows extremely flexable custom firmware to be written; it also supports the board's interconnect space and diagnostic routines.

This board makes full use of Multibus II message space. It will accept interrupt messages from up to 256 sources. The board will respond to commands sent in the data portion of messages or can optionally respond to a message interrupt by fetching commands from a queue in system RAM (for systems that do not support full message passing).

Data transfers can also take place in one of two ways. To maximize PSB bandwidth, they normally occur through message space, using solicited messages. The board also supports an alternate method of data transfer -- DMA transfers to and from PSB system memory for systems that do not support solicited message passing.

The board runs extensive diagnostic routines on power-up. It also continuously check for RAM parity errors and checks for transfer errors when performing as a requesting agent on the PSB.
